SIMPLICITY is the word that best defines Uruguay, South America’s second smallest country, still fairly undiscovered and often mistakenly overlooked by tourists visiting the continent.

Uruguay is a delightfully low-key, hospitable country that tries to keep the secret of its 650km of pristine coastline and hidden lagoons with white sandy beaches. Travelling along the coast you will surely discover a myriad of pretty towns and cities, like the culturally vibrant capital Montevideo, the picturesque 17th-century port of Colonia del Sacramento and the trendy coastal resort of Punta del Este.

Nature lovers should also head inland to Uruguay's unspoiled interior to explore an amazing variety of lakes and wetlands, home to an enormous diversity of birds and wildlife that live in harmony with the cattle, sheep and horses of the vast pampas. Lush forests, tropical savannahs and a host of ecosystems that are mainly concentrated in the "Bañados del Este” a UNESCO site and Biosphere Reserve.

Strategically located on the north shore of the Río de la Plata, Uruguay’s history and territory has always been a hotly contested affair. Firstly, being disputed between early European settlers, initially the Spanish and Portuguese and later by the emerging regional powers of Argentina and Brazil. This has contributed to enrich the culture and character of the place, forging a cultural identity different from most of the other Latin American countries. There is a deep-rooted sense of community and human warmth in its people.
